EVENT: Time to Talk

Cost of Living Crisis – Panel Discussion for World Social Justice Day Women’s Interfaith Network (WIN) commemorated World Social Justice Day with the latest edition in the #TimeToTalk panel series, looking at the Cost of Living Crisis, its impact on women and underlying issues of financial inequality. Our speakers were Danni Malone, Director of Network Programmes and Innovation at the Trussell Trust, and Ignacia Pinto, the Research and Policy Officer at the Women’s Budget Group. We discussed how years of austerity, the global pandemic and fast-climbing inflation have created a climate where unprecedented numbers of people are finding themselves unable to afford the essentials. However, this is not just an economic crisis but a gendered crisis, where women often take on the role of ‘shock absorbers’ for their families and households. Communities are now caught between needing to de-stigmatise financial support and accessing frontline services, while resisting the narrative that severe poverty is a normal part of British society in 2023.
